Champion Recognized as a Safety Leader by Alberta Government
The Alberta Government formally recognized Champion for being the premier safety
leader in the manufacturing and processing sector for the whole province at an
awards ceremony held on April 12th. QHSSE Manager, Jeff Wheeler, and QHSSE
specialists, Denis Hamel and Bradley Huber, all attended the special event to
accept this prestigious award.
The awards ceremony took place in Edmonton at the historic Alberta House. It was
well attended by dignitaries and media outlets, which gave Champion an
opportunity to shine on a public stage. Our own Jeff Wheeler was even
interviewed by Global television.

As part of the Alberta Employment and Immigration portfolio, Work Safe Alberta
and the Occupational Health and Safety Council sponsor three types of health and
safety awards, including leader, innovation and performance improvement.
The workplace health and safety leader award is presented to an organization
that leads its industry with exemplary health and safety management practices,
and a proven injury and illness prevention track record. There is only one award
available in each of eight industry sectors, so qualifying for this award is no
easy feat. Champion was one of only two companies that earned the safety leader
distinction in their respective sectors.
Champion earned this award for our commitment to achieving and exceeding
multiple health and safety certifications using industry recommended practices
for the basis of training. Champion was introduced as a six time best safety
performer, a feat achieved by only 22 companies in the whole province of
Alberta.
The Minister of Employment and Immigration, Honourable Thomas Lukaszuk, was on
hand to present these awards. He believes that the role of government is to to
educate, enforce where required, and (equally importantly) to recognize those
who excel. He said, "Safety is not just the right thing to do, it is the smart
thing to do."
Tim Bennett, Chair of the Occupational Health and Safety Council, QHSSE
Specialists Brad Huber and Denis Hamel, QHSSE Manager Jeff Wheeler, and the
Honourable Thomas Lukaszuk, Minister of Employment and Immigration
